Door, bonnet and boot open warning lights
A car with open doors on the dashboard means a door, bonnet or boot is not fully latched. Why it matters and what to do if it stays on.
Looking for more detail? Our full guide covers this topic in depth, with step-by-step advice and sources.
A door, the bonnet or the boot lid is not fully closed, or its switch is faulty.
What it looks like
A car seen from above with doors open, or a car with the bonnet or boot raised. Colour: Red or amber.
Common causes
- A door, boot or bonnet not fully latched
- A faulty door switch or latch sensor
- Dirt or ice in the latch
What to do
- Stop safely and check every door, the boot and the bonnet.
- An unlatched bonnet can fly up at speed and block your view: never drive with the bonnet warning on.
- If everything is shut, the latch switch may need cleaning or replacing.
Can I keep driving?
Not until you have checked; never with an unlatched bonnet.
MOT
Doors must open and close properly from inside and outside for the MOT; a bonnet that will not latch is a fail.
Symbols vary slightly between makes. Always check your owner's handbook. General guidance only; if in doubt, call your breakdown provider.
