The red oil-can light means oil pressure has dropped. Why it is one of the most serious warnings, what to check and when to call for help.
Looking for more detail? Our full guide covers this topic in depth, with step-by-step advice and sources.
Oil pressure in the engine has fallen below a safe level. Without pressure, moving parts are not lubricated and can be damaged within minutes.
What it looks like
An old-fashioned oil can with a drip. Colour: Red.
Common causes
- Very low oil level
- Failed oil pump
- Blocked oil pickup or filter
- Faulty pressure sensor
What to do
- Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off the engine.
- Wait a few minutes, then check the oil level on the dipstick on level ground.
- If low, top up with the oil grade in your handbook. If the light stays on after topping up, or the level was fine, do not drive: call breakdown recovery.
Can I keep driving?
No. Stop as soon as it is safe.
MOT
Not an MOT item itself, but the underlying fault can cause serious engine damage.
Symbols vary slightly between makes. Always check your owner's handbook. General guidance only; if in doubt, call your breakdown provider.
